We recently spoke with the lads at RVCA who are basing themselves out of J Bay about there plans regarding the brand and setting up a new team in SA, this is what they had to say. “Two words - high profi le, RVCA only want A grade skaters that have A grade sponsors, RVCA has a certain high-end image to uphold so the skate team should also refl ect that. These are the fundementals that we are sticking to in South Africa. Just as the surf team has presence in and out of the ocean, the skate team causes noises on and off the streets. Ranging from acclaimed skate icon and world renown artist/photographer Ed Templeton, to bicoastal trend setter Kevin ‘Spanky’ Long, RVCA’s skate teams extra curricular activities gain the brand as much notoriety as their skating. On the home front we have Loucas Polydorou who has just come back from Spain shooting a 35mm movie for Famalia. Loucas is a straight forward kind of guy that says it like it is, as is his skating. Travelling the world year round, the skate team, like all skateboarders, are cynical about blantant ‘promotion’ and rather just wear a brand that because they are paid to, many members actually contribute to seasonal design, futher giving RVCA the ability tp provide them with a movement, or lifestyle that is something true and real.” Check out - RVCA

South Africa’s concrete gnarlers have been practicing their bowl riding skills in preparation for the upcoming Quicksilver Bowl riders contest, one of the best events on the South African skateboarding calendar. With a R10,000 first place prize, the Quicksilver Bowl riders attracts skaters from all over South Africa, and this year’s event, scheduled to take place in the Snake Run at Durban’s Wave House in Gateway at 18:00 on Saturday the 3rd of October, is set to be the biggest edition to date. Always a major hit with spectators it attracts a capacity crowd and delivers an hugely festive atmosphere, and this year promises to be no different. Taking the form of a jam session in which six skaters skate the Snake Run at the same time. The top six dudes on the night will go into a jam session final to compete for the R16, 000 total prize money. With a substantial first place cheque up for grabs, the Bowl riders has attracted a host of top skaters from across the country, and some of the contestants this year include defending ramp champ Dallas Oberholzer (Durban), last year’s runner-up JP du Preez (Pretoria), and consummate stand-out Will Twala (CT). Umdloti’s Yann Horowitz placed third last year, and being a Wave House local he has been logging plenty of over time in the Snake Run. Another aspect of the 2009 Quiksilver Bowlriders will be a demo by Quiksilver International Skate Team Alex Giraud (France) and Daniel Cardone (Italy). The footage from the event will be featured on Boardriders TV on Supersport as well as in Session Issue 38.
